How our fire shutters work

Fire shutters are ideal for protecting your building’s exterior. Each of our fire shutter units will be initiated by the release mechanism you choose. This includes:

Fusible link

A soldered link design that melts in a fire condition. This will either release the drop weight on a manual door or clutch on electrically operated doors, activating closure.

Manual solenoid release

Linked to the fire alarm: Upon receiving a 24V DC signal, the solenoid will release the drop weight or brake unit. The unit can be reset manually.

Automatic reset solenoid

As above, this is linked to the fire alarm – on receiving a 24V DC signal, the clutch will disengage allowing the door to close under a controlled descent. Once it returns to the ‘open’ position after removal of the fire signal, the solenoid will reset automatically.

Modes of Operation

Not all fire shutters are the same, keep reading to discover the different modes of operation and other specifications.

Self-Coiling / Manual Shutters

Ideal for smaller openings, this type of shutter can be manually operated by handles attached to the bottom rail. Manual shutters are mainly designed to be left up or used on an infrequent basis.

In the event of a fire, the shutter is automatically closed by a fusible link, or if the door is to be activated by a remote fire alarm signal, a speed governor should be included to control the shutter curtains in descent.

Maximum structural size: 3000mm wide x 3000m high

Chain Operation / Manual Shutters

Our chain-operated manual shutters have a hand chain mechanism through a main (motor-type) unit aiding a controlled descent.

Suitable for larger operations than the self-coiling shutter system, this type is also designed to be left up, to only be closed in the event of a fire.

Maximum structural size: 5000mm wide x 4000mm high

Electrically Operated Shutters

Designed for, but not limited to, larger openings, our electrically operated fire shutters are driven by a geared motor, activated by a push-button control station.

It can be manually operated by pulling a cord to close the shutter, with a hand chain to open it. These types of shutters are not recommended for opening in constant use.

Maximum structural size: 7000mm wide x 7000mm high
